2002

After the delicious hotel breakfast our Close Up week officially kicked off with a visit to the Jefferson Memorial. The day was cold and windy but the skys were blue and the weather forcasters promised warming temps as the week progressed. Our first seminar - everyone's favorites - was an "Insiders View of Washington" and took place at the Office of Personnel Management with lobbyist Lauren Maddox. After a spirited round of Q & A's by the Close Up students it was off to lunch at the Washington Hard Rock. The afternoon brought another seminar and monument visit as well as a visit to "Protest Park" - Lafayette Park. Dan Gainor formerly of the Washington Times addressed the group on issues of the modern media and the popular FDR memorial finished our day before dinner and evening workshops. Oh, don't forget the student/teacher meetings - about 9:30 PM. Long Day!
