TOMMY R. FRANKS

Tommy Franks was the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Central Command, overseeing American military operations in a 25 country region, including the Middle East. On September 11, 2001, he watched on TV with the rest of the world as terrorists flew a hijacked jet liner into the second tower of New York's world Trade Center, and the moment is 'indelibly burned" in his memory. As America responded to this terrorism, General Franks directed the charge against the Taliban in Afghanistan. In March of this year, once again answered his nation's call and led the American occupation forces in the successful invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

This American hero was commissioned a second lieutenant in l967 and spent the next 36 years in service to his country. His military duties have led him to Vietnam, to the Pentagon, to Europe, and to Korea. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and a number U.S. and foreign-service awards.
